Borderline Personality Disorder generally referred to as Borderline Personality Disorder, is a mental sickness or disorder causing changes in the personality of an adult. BPD is found to be in around 3% grown up adults above 18 years of age. The percentage of women affected by BPD is more than that of men.

Characteristics of Borderline Personality Disorder: A person suffering from BPD suddenly has mood swings and changes. His behavior towards a particular person especially someone who is related to him is different at different times. His overall behavior is also very unstable. Generally you would find a patient suffering from BPD to be very depressed without any reason. This even leads to the person to cause injury to himself and at times even attempt suicide.

Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder: Generally in case of other serious personality disorders, it is found that the person suffering from it has the same unstable mood for long durations, say like a week or so. In case of borderline personality disorder, the change in moods and temperament is in spurts. The person may suddenly get angry or anxious or excited or may suddenly go into a depression for a while. He could remain in a particular state for some hours or at the most for a single day. He may get suddenly aggressive or at times feel that he is some sort of a victim who is being treated poorly or not being understood well. He may also feel that he does not get any sort of recognition in the society amongst his relatives or peers or at work.

Such a patient may at one time be extremely loving and caring towards his near and dear ones and suddenly at the next moment may act very angry or even violent with them. Thus it may happen that sometimes they behave very close to someone and at times may act like complete strangers. People suffering from BPD face lot of problems in their social life. They cannot make long term plans for their lives and careers and cannot have long term relations with others. Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder: With changing times, physiactric treatments have also improved and changed a lot with new findings and research. There are a few drugs prescribed in particular cases to take care of depression. A new therapy called as dialectical behavior therapy has been developed after consistent research and study of borderline personality disorder.
