Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a mental condition or mental instability wherein a person suffering from it feels extremely important, constantly seeks attention and admiration and shows no respect for others. People would find such patients arrogant and overconfident. They want others to constantly acknowledge that they are far more superior to them. The traits of this  would generally be found in people who are very successful but a person can be said to be suffering of Narcissistic Personality Disorder only when these traits start causing discomfort and harm to others consistently.

Characteristics of Narcissistic Personality Disorder: A Narcissistic Personality Disorder patient cannot take failure or defeat or even some sort of criticism very well. At times the patient may not make it obvious buy he certainly feels humiliated and let down which may lead him to react with extreme anger or detest. Since they are incapable of being sensitive to others feelings, Narcissistic Personality Disorder patients face a lot of problems socially amongst friends, relatives and coworkers. They are highly ambitious and over confident and their tolerance levels are very low. Such patients avoid taking up tasks and duties where there is a possibility of failure.  They are incapable of adjusting to others and with age this problem further aggravates.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder may thus lead to major depression because of the above reasons. The patient may become hysteric and paranoid even in case of slightest and simple defeats or failures. They show anti social behavior very easily and constant depression may even lead to a major depressive disorder in some cases. The patient may sometimes start behaving like some sort of a maniac and even show frequent signs of other personality disorders like Borderline, Histrionic, Paranoid and Antisocial along with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The patient may sometimes take up to drugs or other substance related disorders.

Research and Treatment of Narcissistic Personality Disorder:  No laboratory research or study or findings have been documented anywhere in case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Thus psychological therapy does not work out in this case. The other problem is that such patients very rarely accept the problem and look for treatment.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is found very less in adult. It is found in a certain percentage of adolescents. Less than 1% of grown ups suffer from Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Unlike other disorders, this particular disorder is found more in men than women.
