Depression and addiction treatment may be required so as to deal with someone with a substance abuse problem along with depression.  The fact that the individual has two problems that require treatment has led to this being referred to as a dual diagnosis. A dual diagnosis is a common occurrence among addicts; although many of them may not even be aware of this second condition. If somebody has depression along with their addiction it will not only make it more difficult to stop, but it is also likely to mean that life will remain unbearable if the depression remains untreated in recovery. For this reason it is important that people with a dual diagnosis are identified by the medical professionals.

There are a variety of reasons why somebody might have a dual diagnosis involving depression. It could be that there depression existed prior to the addiction. In this case it will have often been an attempt to escape their symptoms that led to the addiction in the first place. This individual may not have realised they had any sort of depression, but only that when they abused alcohol or drugs it made their life seem more manageable and bearable. The fact is that in the beginning drugs and alcohol can alleviate symptoms and make people feel better. Over time though, these same drugs will completely destroy the person and if they don’t get depression and addiction treatment then the chances are that they will die or go mad; many will die from their own hand through suicide.

Another reason why a person might be needing depression and addiction treatment is that their alcohol or drug abuse has led to them developing depression. Alcohol induced depression is very common among alcoholics; in fact alcohol works as a depressant. The fact that this form of depression has been caused by addiction does not make it any more bearable, and the addict is likely to fall further into addiction in an attempt to escape the pain. This will lead to a vicious circle of increased depression followed by increased attempts to escape the depression by more abuse which leads to further depression. There is only one place this can lead to unless the individual gets depression and addiction treatment.

When it comes to treating a dual diagnosis the important thing is to end the abuse first of all. It will not be possible to treat the depression while the person is still abusing a substance. The good news is that once the withdrawal symptoms have been passed it will then be possible to treat the depressive symptoms. In some cases where the depression has been caused by the abuse it may work out that only minimal intervention will be needed to treat the depression. If somebody does manage to enter recovery and there is no attempt to treat the depression of if it isn’t noticed then this could lead to a short-lived and unhappy recover; this is why depression and addiction treatment are usually called for.
