Panic disorders and addiction treatment will be required for somebody with a dual diagnosis involving substance abuse and an anxiety disorder.  A dual diagnosis refers to the existence of co-morbid conditions involving alcohol or drug addiction along with a mental health problem. It is now believed that there are many people in society with a dual diagnosis; with some people claiming that more than 50% of those with a mental health problem will also develop an addiction. This is a serious problem because the presence of a dual diagnosis makes recovery from either condition more difficult unless they are treated effectively. Panic disorders and addiction treatment should be aimed at dealing with both issues for success to be more likely.

There are two roads that are believed to lead to dual diagnosis involving panic disorders; the first road involves the person having the condition prior to falling into addiction while the second road involves the panic disorder arising due to the addiction. In the first instance the person will have found that anxiety was making their life unbearable and so they turned to drugs or alcohol which was able to provide them some relief in the short-term. Over time there the benefits derived from the substance they are abusing will begin to be overtaking by the negative impact of addiction. The day will arrive when there is no benefit to be had from the addiction and all that is left is misery; although denial may mean that the person is unable to recognise this. If they are to be helped then panic disorders and addiction treatment is a must.

It can also happen that the person ends up developing a panic disorder because of their substance abuse. It is easy to observe the destructive force an addiction has on a person’s body. A similar amount of destruction can be occurring to their mind, and this explains why so many addicts develop mental health issues. In many cases they won’t even notice the arrival of this new disorder and put the mental anguish down to other things. They will likely increase their addictive behaviour in an attempt to escape these uncomfortable symptoms without realising that they are in fact exacerbating the problem. This will continue until the individual receives panic disorders and addiction treatment that will allow them to escape their destructive downward trajectory.

It sometimes happens that those with a dual diagnosis will slip through the net with health professionals failing to notice their second problem. If an addict is presenting symptoms associated with an anxiety disorder then it would be easy to dismiss these because similar symptoms occur with addiction itself. This failure to identify the addiction is bad because it means that the person will find recovery difficult while they are still not treated for their other condition; many people will become so disheartened that they return to their addiction. That is why panic disorders and addiction treatment need to be tackled together so as to allow progress along the road to recovery and happiness.
